This post describes the journey, ideas and plans in building an affordable CNC router. Commercially available router designs keep continuously approaching a price tag of thousand euros. With this build the target price is under 400 euros, excluding spindle.
The design is minimalistic - a steel welded moving table using linear bearings. The welding skills required can be easily learned on the fly - modern inverter stick welders are cheap and small. Alternative frame materials (aluminium, wood?) can offer good alternatives if welding is not an option. This post is divided into parts that document the build in easy to follow sections. This is not intended to be a step by step guide, but rather to hopefully serve as a loose collection of useful things learned while building the router.
